The problem
The doorway is framed by heavy rusticated blocks with a moulded stone hood over it. Several of the blocks at the lower courses had eroded and split — the sort of decay that runs from the base upward, where splash and salt do the most damage.
What we did
The failed blocks were cut out individually and replaced in new stone worked to the same rusticated face, leaving the sound stonework and the hood above completely undisturbed. Only what had failed came out.
The result
A doorway that is sound at the base again, with the repair readable as honest new stone rather than disguised. It will tone in.
