Stonemasonry in Broadway
Broadway is often called the show village of the Cotswolds, and its broad green and golden limestone frontages set a high bar: work on stone here is on display. The village and its neighbours — Willersey, Childswickham, Buckland, Laverton, Stanton, Snowshill — are built almost entirely in Cotswold stone, from cottages and farmhouses to the dry stone walls climbing towards Broadway Tower.
We're based over the hill in Winchcombe, about 15 minutes away, and work in and around Broadway regularly.
What we do around Broadway
- Stone restoration — lime repointing, matched stone replacement and repair on the village's period and listed buildings, done to the standard a place like Broadway expects.
- Dry stone walling — the walls around Broadway are classic North Cotswold work; we build new walls, rebuild slumped ones and repair gaps using traditional technique. See dry stone walling.
- Stone wall repair — garden and roadside walls rebuilt with the original stone, tied invisibly into the standing work.
- Stone cleaning — careful, tested cleaning of algae and grime; never pressure-blasting, which would ruin the soft weathered face that gives Broadway stone its colour.
- New stonework and carving — extensions and garden stonework matched to existing buildings, and hand-carved house names for village properties.
- House signs and numbers — carved names and numbers for Broadway’s honey-stone cottages and the properties along the High Street, cut in stone chosen to sit against what is already there.
Working to Broadway's standard
Broadway sits within the Cotswolds National Landscape and has a conservation area with a high concentration of listed buildings; scrutiny of work here is real, and rightly so. Matched stone, lime mortar, correct joint finishes and honest hand-worked detail aren't optional extras in a village like this — they're the baseline, and they're how we work everywhere anyway.
It's worth noting Broadway is in Worcestershire, not Gloucestershire — the county boundary means nothing to the stone, and nothing to us either.
