Our Work

Projects

The best way to judge a stonemason is by the work. Each case study below shows the problem we found, what we did about it, and how it turned out — before, during and after.

Stone Fireplaces · The Cotswolds Inglenook Fireplace Restoration A cottage inglenook with worn, pitted jambs. New dressed stone either side, the original beam untouched — as Jackson's put it, good for another 200 years. Stone Carving · Bibury, Gloucestershire A Chimney Cap for Bibury A chimney cap, cut and worked in the workshop from solid stone, then delivered out to Bibury. Stonemasonry · Burford, Oxfordshire Courtyard Walling at the Lamb Inn, Burford A new coursed wall with a dressed coping, and a curved edge sweeping round a gravel bed — built into an existing courtyard at the Lamb Inn, Burford. Stone Restoration · The Cotswolds Church Chimney and a Colony of Bees A Cotswold church needed its chimney taken down. A honeybee colony had other ideas, so the job started with a beekeeper and a rehoming. Stone Restoration · Bibury, Gloucestershire Window Repair at The Swan, Bibury The stone around a window at The Swan in Bibury had eroded to the point that it was no longer doing its job. New stone brought the opening back into structure. Stone Restoration · The Cotswolds Stone Cill Repair An eroded cill and mullion, cut out and replaced with new dressed stone that matches the original profile. Stone Restoration · Burford, Oxfordshire Doorway Repair at The Baytree, Burford The rusticated jambs of a doorway at The Baytree in Burford had eroded and broken back. New stone, pieced in block by block. Stone Restoration · Winchcombe, Gloucestershire Stone Porch Repair, Winchcombe The cornice on top of a classical porch had spalled and broken away. Repaired in place, above the front door, without disturbing the rest of the elevation. House Signs & Numbers · The Cotswolds Stone House Signs and Numbers House names and numbers, cut by hand to your specification — built into a new wall as it goes up, or fixed to one that is already there. Stone Wall Repair · Bibury, Gloucestershire River Coln Wall Repair, Bibury The wall holding the River Coln through the gardens at The Swan, Bibury — repaired in the water, in one of the most photographed places in the Cotswolds. Dry Stone Walling · Burford, Oxfordshire Retaining Wall Rebuild, Burford The top of a roadside retaining wall in Burford had broken up and was spilling toward the road. Rebuilt, it runs straight and level again. Dry Stone Walling · The Cotswolds A Doorway Through a 7ft Dry Stone Wall Taking an opening through seven feet of dry stone wall, and building both sides back so they look as though the gateway was always there. Dry Stone Walling · The Cotswolds Eight-Foot Wall with a Carved Name Plaque Eight feet high, six metres long, and a hand-carved name plaque set into the face of it. Walling and banker work on the same job. Dry Stone Walling · Gloucestershire A Rustic Wall for a Garden The brief was simply for something rustic to complement the garden. A new dry stone wall, built and coped by hand, dividing the drive from the lawn.
