Repairing stone walls properly
A stone wall rarely fails all at once. It starts with a bulge, a lean, a few slipped copings or an open joint — and then one wet winter a section is on the ground. The good news is that stone walls are honest structures: they can almost always be repaired, the original stone can almost always be reused, and a well-executed repair ties invisibly into the sound wall either side.
We repair both types of wall found across Gloucestershire:
- Dry stone walls — rebuilt without mortar using traditional walling technique (see our dry stone walling page for how these walls go together);
- Mortared stone walls — garden and boundary walls laid in mortar, repaired and repointed in lime so they can breathe and move as intended.
Common problems we fix
- Collapsed sections ("gaps") — the fallen stone sorted and the section rebuilt, toothed into the standing wall.
- Bulging and leaning walls — the failed area taken down past the distortion and rebuilt plumb and properly hearted, addressing whatever caused it: soil pressure, tree roots, water, or a poorly built core.
- Vehicle strike damage — a depressingly regular job on roadside walls; we rebuild the damaged length and can liaise with insurers, providing the itemised quotation and photographs a claim needs.
- Loose or missing copings — cope stones refixed or replaced; an open wall top lets water straight into the core, so this small repair prevents big ones.
- Failed pointing — open and eroded joints raked out and repointed in lime mortar; cement pointing removed where it is doing damage (see repointing).
- Retaining wall failures — assessment and rebuilding of stone retaining walls, with drainage dealt with properly this time.
- Frost and weather damage — spalled and shattered stone cut out and matched replacements pieced in.
Why walls fail — and why it matters
Rebuilding a wall without fixing the reason it failed is a repair with an expiry date. As part of every quote we look at the cause:
- Water is behind most failures: blocked drainage behind retaining walls, water pouring off a slope onto the wall base, or an open top letting rain into the core.
- Vegetation — ivy prising joints open, tree roots heaving foundations, or a hedge holding a wall permanently damp.
- Original build quality — many walls were poorly hearted or lack through stones, so a rebuild done right is genuinely stronger than the wall was on its best day.
- Ground movement — settlement, traffic vibration on roadside walls, or livestock pressure on field walls.

What a repair costs
Repairs are usually priced per collapsed or rebuilt section rather than per metre, with access, wall height and stone condition the main variables. Reusing your existing stone keeps costs down; where stone is missing or broken we supply matched Cotswold stone, weathered or new as the wall demands.

Frequently asked questions
A section of my wall has collapsed — can the stone be reused? Almost always, yes. Dry stone in particular is fully reusable; we sort the fallen stone, discard only what has shattered, and top up with matched stone if needed.
Do I need to repair the whole wall? Rarely. Most failures are local. We rebuild what has failed and tooth the new work into the sound wall — though if the rest of the wall is on its way, we'll show you why and let you decide.
A car hit my wall — can you help with the insurance claim? Yes. We provide the written itemised quotation and photographic record insurers ask for, and we're used to working to their timescales.
Is a repaired wall as strong as the original? A properly rebuilt section — correctly hearted, with through stones and a sound coping — is typically stronger than what it replaces, because it's built right and the cause of the failure has been dealt with.
