Stonemasonry in Stow-on-the-Wold

At around 800 feet, Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest of the Cotswold towns — a market town built four-square in limestone around its famous square, surrounded by some of the finest dry stone walling country in England. The villages nearby read like a Cotswold roll-call: the Swells, the Slaughters, Bourton-on-the-Water, Longborough, Broadwell, Bledington, Naunton.

We're based in Winchcombe, about 25 minutes away, and cover Stow and the north Cotswold villages regularly.

What we do around Stow

  • Dry stone walling — this is the heart of it here: field walls, paddock walls, garden and boundary walls built and rebuilt in traditional North Cotswold style. See dry stone walling.
  • Stone wall repair — gaps, bulges and vehicle-strike damage on roadside walls rebuilt with the original stone; exposure on the wold means copings and wall tops take a battering, and we put them right.
  • Stone restoration — lime repointing, stone replacement and repairs on the town's listed and period buildings, and on the cottages and farmhouses of the surrounding villages.
  • Stone cleaning — measured cleaning of algae and grime, chosen for soft limestone; especially relevant on north-facing and shaded elevations at this altitude.
  • New stonework and carving — matched stone for extensions, garden stonework, and hand-carved signs and date stones.
  • House signs and numbers — carved names and numbers for Stow properties and the surrounding villages, in stone matched to the building rather than bought off a shelf.

Exposure, frost and wold-top walls

Stow's altitude is part of its character and part of its maintenance bill. Walls and buildings up here see more frost cycles, more wind-driven rain and more weather generally than the vale below. For stonework that means: copings matter more (an open wall top fails fast), lime mortars must be specified for exposure, and frost-shattered stone is a routine repair rather than a rarity. We build and repair accordingly — it's the difference between work that lasts up here and work that doesn't.
