Stonemasons for the Cotswolds
Everything people love about the Cotswolds — the golden villages, the field walls threading over the hills, the way whole towns seem to have grown out of the ground — is the work of generations of stonemasons using one remarkable material: oolitic Cotswold limestone. It cuts cleanly when fresh, hardens as it weathers, and ranges in colour from the deep honey of the north Cotswolds to the pale grey-cream of the south.
Keeping that landscape looking the way it does isn't a heritage abstraction; it's practical, local work — a rebuilt gap in a field wall, a repointed cottage frontage, a re-carved finial — done properly, in the right stone, with the right mortar. That's the trade we're in.
What we do across the Cotswolds
- Dry stone walling — the region's signature craft: new walls, rebuilds and repairs in traditional style.
- Stone restoration — lime repointing, matched stone replacement and sympathetic repair of period buildings.
- Stone wall repair — collapsed, bulging and vehicle-damaged walls rebuilt with their original stone.
- Stone cleaning — careful, tested cleaning that respects the weathered face of soft limestone.
- Stonemasonry — new stonework for extensions, gardens and new builds, matched to the local vernacular.
- Stone carving — hand-carved house signs, date stones and replacement architectural detail.
- House signs and numbers — hand-cut house names, door numbers and date stones, built into a wall or fixed to an existing one, anywhere we work across the Cotswolds.
Working in a protected landscape
Most of the Cotswolds falls within the Cotswolds National Landscape (formerly the AONB), and its towns and villages carry extensive conservation-area and listed-building protection. In practice that means work on stone is expected to be done traditionally — matched local stone, lime mortars, honest detail — and that planning and consent questions come up often. We work within these frameworks constantly and can advise early, before designs or applications are fixed.
Where exactly we cover
We're based in Winchcombe in the north Cotswolds, and work regularly in Cheltenham, Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold, Tewkesbury, Gloucester and Cirencester — and in the towns and villages between: Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh, Bourton-on-the-Water, the Slaughters, Painswick, Northleach, Bibury and beyond. For the right project we'll travel further; just ask.
